British Values
At St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that the promotion and education around British Values are key as their origins come from the Christian values we hold as a community. In line with our mission statement and school ethos, British values are integrated throughout our school community and the curriculum that we provide for our children.
The fundamental British Values consist of:
- Democracy
- Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Democracy
We actively promote and model democracy by:
- Ensuring that all children are listened to by adults.
- Involving children in decision making processes in order that they begin to understand the influence of democracy.
- Teaching a curriculum that provides a broad knowledge of, and respect, for public institutions and services.
- Providing opportunities to participate in debating competitions.
- Modelling how perceived injustice can be peacefully challenged. For example by teaching about inspirational figures such as St Oscar Romero and Martin Luther King.
Rule of Law
We actively promote and model the rule of law by:
- Teaching respect for the law and helping children to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals.
- Highlighting the rules of the Church and God through the greatest commandment of all - love your neighbour as yourself.
- Promoting the school ‘Golden Rules’ for behaviour and ensuring they are followed by our whole school community.
- Ensuring the consistent implementation of our Behaviour Policy; this is based on the Christian values of forgiveness and mutual respect.
- Helping to distinguish between right and wrong. Our children are taught that actions have consequences; it is their responsibility to behave in the right way and to make the right choices. When we make mistakes, then we need to seek ways to make amends with those we hurt.
Individual Liberty
We actively promote and model individual liberty by:
- Providing a safe, secure and nurturing environment in which pupils know their boundaries and are encouraged to make choices safely.
- Encouraging children to be reflective; to ask and answer questions in order to inform their decision making and to have the confidence to express an opinion. Our pupils are encouraged to agree and disagree with their peers and give reasons why.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
We actively promote and model respect and tolerance by:
- Discussing and celebrating individual differences; each person is unique and "created in the image of God.”
- Recognising and valuing the opinions of the whole school community.
- Constantly promoting respect for others as good manners; this is reinforced though RE, assemblies and acts of worship.
- Showing how Jesus encouraged tolerance in stories such as The Good Samaritan and The Women at the Well.
- Helping children to acquire an understanding of and respect for their own, and other cultures and ways of life.
- Having an effective anti-bullying policy.
- Teaching about other faiths through our RE curriculum and wider curricular experiences e.g. recognition of Diwali and Ramadan.
