St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School Ripon

Curriculum: Learning to Love, Loving to Learn

Curriculum Intent

The curriculum represents the totality of a child's experience during their time in school. We believe in providing a broad and balanced learning experience for all our children, so they not only develop a passion for learning, but also grow into loving and responsible individuals who fulfil a constructive place in society.

Our Curriculum:

  • Is based on the principles of Catholic education where every child is nurtured to be the best person they can be.
  • Is broad and balanced to ensure that all pupils have access to a common body of essential knowledge as defined within the National Curriculum.
  • Supports children in developing the behaviours and attitudes necessary to become responsible members of a community.
  • Fosters a range of important attitudes to support children in becoming effective learners,
  • Places the development of reading and oracy at the heart of everything we do.
  • Is inclusive to all through the use of strategies to support learning.
  • Provides experiences to develop cultural capital and an understanding of the wider world and life in modern Britain.
  • Recognises the importance of providing opportunities to promote physical and mental well- being.

Our Big Picture Document provides an overview of our curriculum offer.

Curriculum Implementation

Our approach to curriculum implementation is based in the following key principles:

  • The curriculum is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and pupils can work towards clearly defined end points.
  • The subject curriculum is designed and delivered in a way that allows pupils to transfer new knowledge to long term memory.
  • Teachers enable pupils to understand key concepts by presenting information clearly and encouraging appropriate discussion.
  • Pupils are given opportunities to embed concepts in their long term memory and apply them fluently. This takes time.
  • Teachers identify and teach subject specific vocabulary.
  • Teachers check pupils’ understanding effectively, and identify and correct misunderstandings through questioning and interventions.
  • Knowledge and understanding is evaluated through on-going assessment.
  • Staff have access to training and support so they possess the expert knowledge needed to implement the curriculum effectively.
