St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School Ripon

Mathematics

At St. Wilfrid’s we follow the National Curriculum Programmes of study. Maths lessons are taught daily in single age classes and focus on pupils’ ability to become fluent in their use of maths in everyday contexts. We strongly believe that good mental maths skills are the basis for developing confident mathematicians and we have adopted the North Yorkshire Planets scheme for learning instant recall facts.

Our aim is to equip children with the skills needed to be able to calculate with fluency, to reason mathematically and confidently solve problems in the following areas:

  • Number and place value
  • Calculations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages, ration and proportion, algebra
  • Measurement
  • Geometry – properties of shape, position and direction
  • Statistics

By providing interesting experiences we hope to foster an enjoyment of Mathematics, leading to understanding, discovery and logical thinking. Where appropriate maths links are also developed within other subjects to consolidate learning and transfer skills.
